'Ashura- (The Day of) - The tenth day of Muharram (the first month of the Islamic calendar). It is a day of voluntary fasting that commemorates the liberation of the people of Musa (Moses) aleyhi salam from the tyranny of the Egyptian Pharoah. It is recommended to fast the day before, or the day after and one may fast all three days successively. i.e. the 9th , 10th, and 11th.
